Q1: What do you think Romans 11:6 means?
Answer: It means that something cannot be by both grace and works—it can only be by one or the other.
Again, the verse says, “And if by grace, then is it no more of works: otherwise grace is no more grace. But if it be of works, then it is no more grace: otherwise work is no more work.”
To better understand this, it might be helpful to give some definitions and explanation. For one, the word grace means “an unmerited reward.” This means if something if by grace, then it is free; it is unearned. Next, the word “wage” means a merited reward, which is obviously earned by working (by works). Therefore, just as something cannot at the same time be free and also not free, or be a gift and also a wage, likewise, something cannot be by grace and also by works.
Now, in our messed-up world today, many people mix the two together. Some company may say, “Give us $20 and we’ll give you this free gift!” However, that is not a gift. Just because some may define a gift as this, that doesn’t mean that is how the Bible uses these words. Furthermore, we shouldn’t change the Bible’s meanings and definitions to fit with our everchanging English words. If the Bible says that grace and works cannot mix, then whenever we see the words grace and works, we need to interpret it with that meaning in mind.
Q2: Is eternal life: (a) a gift, (b) something you must work for, or (c) both?
Answer: (a) a gift.
Romans 6:23: “For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.”
Some people think everyone has eternal life, but that is incorrect. Only those who choose to receive God’s gift of eternal life have it. Take for instance John 3:15-18, where it says, “That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life. For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.” According to this passage, only those who believe will receive eternal life, and those who don’t believe will face condemnation. Again, 1 John 3:15 teaches us that there are some people who do not have eternal life: “Whosoever hateth his brother is a murderer: and ye know that no murderer hath eternal life abiding in him.”
Below are some more verses which teach that salvation (also described with words such as “righteousness,” “eternal life,” “saved,” etc.) is a gift, is free, and is by grace.
Romans 5:15-21: “But not as the offence, so also is the free gift. For if through the offence of one many be dead, much more the grace of God, and the gift by grace, which is by one man, Jesus Christ, hath abounded unto many. And not as it was by one that sinned, so is the gift: for the judgment was by one to condemnation, but the free gift is of many offences unto justification. For if by one man's offence death reigned by one; much more they which receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness shall reign in life by one, Jesus Christ.) Therefore as by the offence of one judgment came upon all men to condemnation; even so by the righteousness of one the free gift came upon all men unto justification of life. For as by one man's disobedience many were made sinners, so by the obedience of one shall many be made righteous. Moreover the law entered, that the offence might abound. But where sin abounded, grace did much more abound: That as sin hath reigned unto death, even so might grace reign through righteousness unto eternal life by Jesus Christ our Lord.”
Ephesians 2:8-9: “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.”
Now, since we’ve already learned that grace and works cannot mix, and since we just learned that eternal life (salvation) is a gift, this means that you cannot work in order to earn eternal life. In fact, if you’re doing that, the Bible seems to indicate that you’re not truly believing on Christ—you’re not truly seeking God’s way of salvation—and therefore you do not have eternal life. The NT (New Testament) Jews would consider themselves to be people who believe God, but their actions and beliefs say otherwise. Paul says of them in Romans 10:2-4: “For I bear them record that they have a zeal of God, but not according to knowledge. For they being ignorant of God's righteousness, and going about to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted themselves unto the righteousness of God. For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to every one that believeth.”
Do you have a “zeal of God,” that is “not according to knowledge,” just like these Jews did? If you do, then you need to accept God’s way, and not yours or someone else’s way. If you’ve believed a lie regarding eternal life, the Bible issues a severe warning to remove yourself from that false teacher, to forsake that false gospel, and to cling to God’s Word for the truth. Paul rebukes the Galatians, who’ve gone from believing in Christ alone for salvation, to believing in Christ + works for salvation, by saying, “I marvel that ye are so soon removed from him that called you into the grace of Christ unto another gospel: Which is not another; but there be some that trouble you, and would pervert the gospel of Christ. But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed. As we said before, so say I now again, if any man preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed” (Galatians 1:6-9). Later on, Paul says, “O foolish Galatians, who hath bewitched you, that ye should not obey the truth, before whose eyes Jesus Christ hath been evidently set forth, crucified among you? This only would I learn of you, Received ye the Spirit by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith? Are ye so foolish? having begun in the Spirit, are ye now made perfect by the flesh? Have ye suffered so many things in vain? if it be yet in vain. He therefore that ministereth to you the Spirit, and worketh miracles among you, doeth he it by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith? Even as Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness. Know ye therefore that they which are of faith, the same are the children of Abraham” (Galatians 3:1-7).
Contrary to trendy opinions, not all paths lead to the same place, and not all gospels save. Paul demands that we let those who preach these slightly false gospels—which are therefore completely false gospels—be accursed.
It is a fact, eternal life is a gift, and therefore it cannot be by works at all. If you seek to go about getting eternal life in your own way, then be warned, for that is dangerous and destructive. We are finite and sinful, so we cannot trust our way above God’s.
John 10:1: “Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that entereth not by the door into the sheepfold, but climbeth up some other way, the same is a thief and a robber.”
Q3: If someone thinks they believe in the Christ of the Bible, does that alone mean they really do?
Answer: no, just because someone thinks they believe in the Christ of the Bible, that doesn’t mean that they actually do.
This is vitally important to understand, and something the Bible warns about many times. To start, consider this true story:
There was a man in Africa several years back claiming to be Jesus Christ. He had his followers do all sorts of wicked things and he became very rich. He told everyone that he was going to rise from the dead three days after he died. Well, after he died, he didn’t rise from the dead (obviously). Question: were those trusting this man to save them from their sins trusting the true Christ? Obviously, the answer is resounding “no.” Question: did they think they were trusting the Christ of the Bible? The answer is “yes.” Yet, that alone doesn’t mean they actually were. They were trusting one of the many false christs that the Bible said would go out into the world.
The Bible warns over and over again that many false Christs and antichrists would go out into the world to deceive people. Why repeat this warning, and why with such severe language, if it wasn’t important? If you talk to the average person today who claims to be a Christian, they typically believe that all these different versions of Christ amongst all these different “Christian” religions, are all the true Christ, even though they all differ drastically. In fact, many “Christians,” when asked to point out a false Christ, cannot do so. Even though the Bible warns that there will be many of these fake christs, and that they will deceive many, many people (not just a few), most cannot point out a false one. Maybe this is because they themselves have been deceived into believing in a christ the Bible doesn’t teach? Have you been deceived? Please listen to the Word of God below.
The Samaritans thought they worshipped the true God, but in John 4:21-25 Christ told the Samaritan woman that they didn’t: “Jesus saith unto her, Woman, believe me, the hour cometh, when ye shall neither in this mountain, nor yet at Jerusalem, worship the Father. Ye worship ye know not what: we know what we worship: for salvation is of the Jews. But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him. God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.”
The Jewish leaders thought they worshipped the true God, but in John 8:42-47 Christ said they didn’t: “Jesus said unto them, If God were your Father, ye would love me: for I proceeded forth and came from God; neither came I of myself, but he sent me. Why do ye not understand my speech? even because ye cannot hear my word. Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it. And because I tell you the truth, ye believe me not. Which of you convinceth me of sin? And if I say the truth, why do ye not believe me? He that is of God heareth God's words: ye therefore hear them not, because ye are not of God.”
Right now, as you read the rest of the information on this page, is when it is decided whether you, the reader, hear God’s words or not, and therefore, whether you are of God or not. The information shared here is directly from God’s Word. Either you believe it or not. Either you choose to listen to God or listen to man. Either you choose to admit you’ve been wrong, and you humble yourself by accepting God’s Word. There are many false Christs. Do you believe this? Are you believing in the true one or a false one? How can you know? Can you prove it? Please consider these verses below:
Matthew 24:4-5 says, “And Jesus answered and said unto them, Take heed that no man deceive you. For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many.”
Mark 13:22: “For false Christs and false prophets shall rise, and shall shew signs and wonders, to seduce, if it were possible, even the elect.”
John 1:1: “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.”
2 Corinthians 4:3-4: “But if our gospel be hid, it is hid to them that are lost: In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them.”
2 Thessalonians 2:3-4: “Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition; Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God.” The Devil will deceive the world by making them think he is God, that’s what “shewing himself that he is God” means.
1 John 2:18: “Little children, it is the last time: and as ye have heard that antichrist shall come, even now are there many antichrists; whereby we know that it is the last time.”
1 John 2:22: “Who is a liar but he that denieth that Jesus is the Christ? He is antichrist, that denieth the Father and the Son.”
1 John 4:3: “And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that spirit of antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come; and even now already is it in the world.”
2 John 1:7: “For many deceivers are entered into the world, who confess not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh. This is a deceiver and an antichrist.”
Q3 says, “If someone thinks they believe in the Christ of the Bible, does that alone mean they really do?” Don’t you think all those who are deceived and believing in a false Christ, think they’re believing in the Christ of the Bible? Of course they do. Don’t you think that if the Devil was going to make a counterfeit $100 bill, that he’d make one that looked as close to the real one as possible? And likewise, don’t you think if the Devil is going to deceive people today with a counterfeit Christ, that he is going to make that false Christ look as close to the original? Of course! Most people holding a counterfeit $100 bill don’t know it is a counterfeit. Also, just because they think it is a real one doesn’t mean it is. Similarly, most people don’t know they’re believing in a counterfeit Christ, and just because they think they’re believing in the Biblical one, doesn’t mean they actually are.
This is important to know and accept, because most of the christs in the world are false Christs. There’s only one, true Christ, and He is the one the world rejected 2000 years ago, and He’s still the one the world (the majority of people) rejects today (Matthew 7:13-15). He is rejected because people hate truth. Jesus speaks the truth, and He is hated for it. He calls people out for lies, hypocrisy, wickedness, and false doctrine, and people hate Him for it. The world wants a one-world religion where nothing matters: truth doesn’t matter, sin doesn’t matter, and the Who doesn’t matter. Jesus said that He is the Way the Truth and the Life. Nobody can go unto the Father unless it is by Him. Jesus said that those who truly want Him, will seek for Him. Most aren’t seeking, they’re blindly believing what their church or family believes.
This is a vital passage to pay attention to: Matthew 7:13-27 says, “Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it. Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves. Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles? Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit. A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit. Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire. Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity. Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock: And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock. And every one that heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand: And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell: and great was the fall of it.”
Ye shall know false teachers, prophets, and Christs by their fruit. Fruit doesn’t just mean “actions,” but also means “beliefs.” Often, the Bible lists “what someone believes” as evidential fruit rather than just “how they’re acting.” “Ye shall know them by their fruit,” means “ye shall know them by what they believe and what they do.” If you think people cannot be deceived by actions alone—that people can just look at the actions of someone and determine if they’re false teachers—then you’re horribly mistaken. Always remember this truth from 2 Corinthians 11:13-15: “For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into the apostles of Christ. And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light. Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also be transformed as the ministers of righteousness; whose end shall be according to their works.” If you only look at “good things” that a church or teacher has done, you’ll be deceived.
So then, who is the true Christ? Honestly, a short answer on here is not enough. You need to read the Bible, and not only read it, but study it, pray over it, asks questions, and seek after the truth with all your heart. More specifically, if you want to know who Christ truly is, study the Gospel of John and the Book of Revelation, for one of the main purposes of those books is revealing Christ. This is the best way to know the true Christ. If you do that, you’ll quickly find that the Christ the world projects, as well as probably the Christ that your church projects, is not the Biblical Christ. This isn’t said to be rude, but because we love you and want you to know the truth. Please don’t get offended by these harsh, but true words. All of God’s prophets, apostles and teachers preached blunt truths, for that is what they were called to do, and that is what we’re called to do as well. We’re called to warn people, and the only way to do that is point out the dangers.
Now, for a little head start to learn about who Christ is, here are some verses, but please go read the Bible for yourself.
John 1:1-5, 14: “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life; and the life was the light of men. And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.” “And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.”
John 14:5-9: “Thomas saith unto him, Lord, we know not whither thou goest; and how can we know the way? Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me. If ye had known me, ye should have known my Father also: and from henceforth ye know him, and have seen him. Philip saith unto him, Lord, show us the Father, and it sufficeth us. Jesus saith unto him, Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known me, Philip? he that hath seen me hath seen the Father; and how sayest thou then, Show us the Father?”
John 20:27-29: “Then saith he to Thomas, Reach hither thy finger, and behold my hands; and reach hither thy hand, and thrust it into my side: and be not faithless, but believing. And Thomas answered and said unto him, My Lord and my God. Jesus saith unto him, Thomas, because thou hast seen me, thou hast believed: blessed are they that have not seen, and yet have believed.”
Revelation 1:1, 8-12a, 17-18: “The Revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave unto him, to shew unto his servants things which must shortly come to pass; and he sent and signified it by his angel unto his servant John:” “I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord, which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty. I John, who also am your brother, and companion in tribulation, and in the kingdom and patience of Jesus Christ, was in the isle that is called Patmos, for the word of God, and for the testimony of Jesus Christ. I was in the Spirit on the Lord's day, and heard behind me a great voice, as of a trumpet, Saying, I am Alpha and Omega, the first and the last: and, What thou seest, write in a book, and send it unto the seven churches which are in Asia; unto Ephesus, and unto Smyrna, and unto Pergamos, and unto Thyatira, and unto Sardis, and unto Philadelphia, and unto Laodicea. And I turned to see the voice that spake with me.” “And when I saw him, I fell at his feet as dead. And he laid his right hand upon me, saying unto me, Fear not; I am the first and the last: I am he that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for evermore, Amen; and have the keys of hell and of death.”
Revelation 22:13-16: “I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, the first and the last. Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city. For without are dogs, and sorcerers, and whoremongers, and murderers, and idolaters, and whosoever loveth and maketh a lie. I Jesus have sent mine angel to testify unto you these things in the churches. I am the root and the offspring of David, and the bright and morning star.”
Just because you think you believe in the Christ of the Bible doesn’t mean you actually do. Everyone who believes in a “christ,” thinks their christ is the Biblical one, but the Bible says otherwise. There are many false Christs, and the devil is out to trick you into believing in one of them. Why do you think the Bible warns of this so many times? Because many will be deceived and will therefore face condemnation for not trusting God’s Word. Trust His Word, and you’ll find the true Christ. Trust your heart or some other man, and you’ll likely be deceived.
Q4: What’s more important: Love or Truth?
Answer: This is somewhat of a trick question, but the answer is this: it depends on the situation. Both are vitally important and cannot be ignored. However, in America today, one of these two things is undervalued much more than the other.
Here’s what seems to be all that matters to most today: false love. Truth seems to be hated or ignored by most today. However, we cannot focus solely on “love,” or else we’re going to be deceived. Yes, Jesus talked much about love, and called it the greatest command, but guess what He talked about more? Truth. The fact that people can have false love and a wrong definition or view of love, shows us the importance and, at times, supremacy of truth.
If you look up the English definition of “love,” you’ll soon learn that there are very many different definitions. Even more so, if you go out and ask people “what is love,” you’ll find an additional 100+ meanings. However, when the Bible talks about love, most of those modern definitions and connotations are not found. In fact, when we look at Biblical love, we find the proclaiming of truth closely linked to it, but that certainly isn’t how many view love today. Most people today think that to share truth is mean and evil. If we warn people that “Beware! You’re believing in a false prophet!” then we’re often hated for it and deemed as mean or unloving. However, the Bible’s love demands we warn others.
Take for instance Proverbs 27:5-6, where it says, “Open rebuke is better than secret love. Faithful are the wounds of a friend; but the kisses of an enemy are deceitful.” Today in America, people would rather be told nice sounding lies, then to receive truthful rebuke. What do you prefer? If there’s something you believe or something you’re doing that is false, do you want to know? Or, would you rather stay in the dark? Would you rather someone withhold the truth and say kind-sounding things instead? If someone goes out of their way to warn you of truth and in so doing, they risk a possible friendship, or risk possibly offending you, how do you respond to that? Do you think they’re rude for it? Do you care at all to listen?
Jesus loved the world, and because of that, besides dying on the cross for us, guess what else He did? He said hard, but true things, and people hated Him for it. For instance, He told the Pharisees that God wasn’t their Father, but rather the devil was (John 8:37-47). What if someone told you this? Would you shut down immediately and get offended, or would you at a minimum consider what they have to say? Maybe there’s a reason they’re saying it? In that passage Jesus said, “And because I tell you the truth, ye believe me not.” Many people will believe nice sounding lies, but refuse to believe the truth.
In Matthew 23, Jesus told Jewish leaders that they were blind guides (23:16), fools (23:17), hypocrites (23:27), and whited sepulchers which indeed appear beautiful outward, but are within full of dead men's bones, and of all uncleanness (23:27). Question: was Jesus being loving here? According to people’s modern-day view of love, then no, He wasn’t being loving. However, Jesus is the author of love, so we know this wasn’t unloving of Him to do. Sometimes, the most loving thing someone can do is speak the cold, hard truth to someone without watering it down.
So, with all this said, here’s the plain truth you may need to hear: If you are believing on some other Christ or some other gospel that some other book outside of the Bible teaches, you are not saved, and you will not spend eternity with God. It is a fact that if given the opportunity, we can prove to you that the Book of Mormon, the Quran, the Watchtower Publications, and many others teach a false Christ and a false gospel that will lead to condemnation. Again, none of this is said with hate, or pride, it is said with love. We love you, and we can show and prove to you the truth. You just have to allow us to. You just have to care for truth more than your feelings.
Please, let us show you Christlike love by pulling you out of the fire, and revealing the truth to you that so many don’t want to hear. Here at Hobble Creek Baptist Church, the theme of our church is “full of grace and truth,” from John 1:14 and 17. Here, we don’t hide what we believe or avoid teaching the truth out of fear of what others think. At the same time though, we’re very gracious, kind, patient, and loving to all people. Just because someone doesn’t align perfectly with us, doesn’t mean we hate them, shun them, or anything like that. We believe in finding the perfect balance of loving people with all our heart and teaching the truth. We believe in being firm on the fundamentals and allowing freedom in preferences. We believe in sacrificing our wants, time, and resources for the sake of others, while being bold to proclaim all truths as found in the Bible.
The antithesis of the Devil is love and truth. He hates both of those things for he is the father of lies, hate and pride. Don’t let Biblical love and truth be the antithesis of you. Love God so much that you are willing to believe Him above all things. Love truth so much that you are willing to sacrifice all things for it.
Q5: Has the original Bible been changed throughout time?
Answer: no, it has not.
One of the greatest weapons of the devil is to either change God’s Word, or cause people to doubt it. It is commonly proclaimed by many today that the Bible is no longer reliable because man has drastically changed it throughout the years. However, from what basis does this come from? Where’s the proof? In fact, if we look at the evidence, we must conclude that the Bible was not changed throughout time. Praise the Lord that He’s able to preserve His Word like He promised!
So, let’s deal with this subject. To start off, let’s first see how that logically, God’s Word has to be preserved.
You see, many of the people claiming that the Bible has been changed and therefore isn’t completely reliable, are people who think it used to be, but that somehow God wasn’t able to preserve it. Many of these people now hold “new” scriptures in their hands that they deem as being God’s preserved Word (such as the Quran and Book of Mormon). It’s funny how in each of these instances, their “new” scriptures, which drastically contradict the Biblical ones, are supposedly going to be preserved from now on.
Listen, if God is going to make prophecies and promises, what is the point if they aren’t preserved? For instance, in the Book of Revelation, there are several prophecies that are still to be fulfilled in the future. One of the main purposes of these prophecies is to warn those who will be around during their fulfillment. Well, if God doesn’t preserve it, then it was in vain. Likewise, God has made many promises which are not just for those during its inception, but many which are for us today. What’s the point, though, of knowing these promises—such as the promise of the rainbow meaning that God will never flood the world again (Genesis 9:1-29)—if they aren’t going to be preserved for us to know God has promised these things? It’s pointless. So, for those who believe that the Bible used to be preserved but isn’t anymore, there’s no way for that to be the case, for the promises and prophecies of God would have been pointless from the moment they were given.
Furthermore, consider these verses which teach that God will preserve His Word:
Matthew 5:18: “For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.”
In case you missed it, that verse teaches that everything in God’s Word, down to one jot, or one little tittle, will be preserved. This doesn’t quite sound like what many religious groups are saying, does it?
Matthew 24:35: “Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away.”
Isaiah 40:8: “The grass withereth, the flower fadeth: but the word of our God shall stand for ever.”
In 1 Peter 1:24-25, Peter, referring to Isaiah 40:8, proves that the same word in Isaiah 40:8 was preserved in his day, for preservation is the only way for it to be preached to his audience. Those verses says, “For all flesh is as grass, and all the glory of man as the flower of grass. The grass withereth, and the flower thereof falleth away: But the word of the Lord endureth for ever. And this is the word which by the gospel is preached unto you.” The only way for Peter to be able to say, “this is the word which by the gospel is preached unto you,” is if the Book of Isaiah was preserved. No doubt, it was, and still is. Additionally, every time Jesus or a prophet quotes from the Old Testament, they are testifying that it was still preserved in their day.
Romans 15:4 says, “For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope.” Everything written in Romans, the New Testament, and the rest of the Bible, is not only for Paul and the Romans, but also for us, just like that which was written in the Old Testament (OT) was not just for OT people, but for the Romans too.
For those who think the Bible used to be God’s Word, but was changed, you’re essentially calling God a liar. You’re essentially saying that God is not all-powerful and sovereign, for He allowed man to destroy His Word.

Before we finish this question though, it is important to know that the majority of experts on this issue agree that the Bible has not been changed over the years in any major way. So, let’s look at what that means so that we can have confidence in the Bible.
There are thousands of manuscripts, as well as other ancient texts which contain verses, passages, etc., where people are quoting those manuscripts (such as sermons). If we gather all that we have, in general, any two manuscripts will agree 99.5% of the time perfectly. “Perfectly” means that the words are spelled the same, there aren’t any accidental words, such as “and, and,” and other like variants. You see, these types of variants are called minor variants, and are not to be considered as significant differences. If I say, “The world is round,” and someone quoting me says, “The earth is round,” the meaning has not changed. More than 99% of variants in the manuscripts we have are these type of minor differences that don’t change God’s Word.
Now, if we deal only with major variants, when we gather all the manuscripts (and everything else), in general, any two manuscripts will agree most than 99.9% of the time fundamentally. The less than .1% of differences are actual changes which do, or could possibly, alter the meaning of the text. However, since we have so many manuscripts and ancient evidence, we can look at everything and more easily determine which is the true meaning. Nevertheless, even if we play the devil’s advocate and still claim these manuscripts have been changed and therefore there are areas in the Bible where we aren’t certain of the exact reading, we still must conclude that as a whole, no doctrine or fundamental teaching is lost. If we want to know “how to have eternal life,” the Bible still can be trusted to teach that. If we want to know “Did God promise to preserve His Word?" we can still find that to be a clear teaching through the manuscripts. If we want to know who God is, we can still depend upon the Bible to accurately teach that. This is because the Bible doesn’t just talk about these doctrines once. If one area where the Bible teaches preservation is in question, well guess what, we still have many other areas that aren’t, and therefore we can still know for a fact that God has preserved His Word.
To better understand this, consider this illustration: Imagine Bob being recorded on five different occasions saying, “God’s Word is preserved.” Then, years after doing this, one of those five recordings gets damaged and becomes more difficult to determine what is said. Well, if someone wanted to know what Bob believed, they’d still be able to because there are four perfectly preserved recordings.
The devil today confuses people and makes them think “We cannot trust the Bible because there’s a verse in question!” This is just as illogical as saying we cannot know what Bob believed in those five recordings because one of them is more difficult to figure out. Since there are many passages that teach God will preserve His Word, we can then move onto fully accepting that God has preserved His Word.
So, even when playing the devil’s advocate, we would only be able to find some areas in the Bible where we aren’t 100% certain what the correct reading is, but yet we’d still have all of the rest of the Bible that we can trust. So, from there, we can conclude that God teaches that He will preserve His Word, and therefore we can still trust it.
Has the Bible been altered and changed? No, and that is a fact, for whether we start from a devil’s advocate position or an honest position, they both lead to the Bible teaching preservation. You can now trust that God has preserved His Word, and that His Word is for us. He has a plan and a will for us, and the only way to know that will, is to read His love letter to us. Praise the Lord that He is mightier than all the gods of this world and therefore can keep it from getting lost! The other religions’ gods admittedly fail at preserving their past scriptures. The Bible’s God, who is the true God, is all-powerful and loving enough to preserve it for us so we can know His promises, prophecies, commands and will.
Q6: What means does the Bible give for determining whether a prophet is from God?
Answer: By (1) their actions, (2) their doctrine, and (3) miraculous proofs. All three of these are ways the Bible gives for determining a true or false prophet.
(1) Their Actions:
Now, before we get into this, it must be said that nobody is perfect (except the prophet Jesus), and no religious group is perfect, neither in practice nor in doctrine. When we begin looking at evidence for true prophets and teachers, we must be fair. However, we also cannot be blind and shut our ears just because we so badly want something to be true. There’s a reason why most people who grow up in a certain religion, live their whole life in that religion—that’s what they’ve been taught and they’ve never questioned it. For instance, almost all who grow up in Buddhism, will spend their whole life in Buddhism. The same goes for Islam, Mormonism, Catholicism, and even Christianity. All of these groups are absolutely certain in their own minds that what they believe is the truth, yet they all radically disagree with the other religions, and we know things which are different are not the same. Most people just accept what they’re told as a child and never put in the honest effort to study it out and listen to what others have to say. Don’t do this. This is a wicked, ungodly practice and it is how people are deceived into cults and lies.
If you try to look at actions alone, you’ll be more easily deceived. Look at the politicians: they act so perfect in front of the camera, and they deceive large masses of people, yet every now and then something is leaked and we get a glimpse at their wickedness. This is not an America-only issue: for all of history, and in countries all around the world, people have been deceived by speech and fake character. Paul himself even says that Satan and his demons can look and act like angels of light. In 2 Corinthians 11:13-15, it says, “For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into the apostles of Christ. And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light. Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also be transformed as the ministers of righteousness; whose end shall be according to their works.” In Galatians 4:16-18, Paul is rebuking the Galatians for believing a lie just because those purporting this lie were zealous. The zealousness of these false teachers persuaded them, and yet because Paul was telling them the truth, they made him an enemy of sorts. Paul says in Galatians 4:16, “Am I therefore become your enemy, because I tell you the truth?” These Galatians would have done well to judge them according to their fruits—both the fruit of their actions and the fruit of their doctrine. Don’t be like these Galatians. Seek truth as well.
However, with all this said, actions and character are still viable means for evidence to support someone being a true or false prophet. It just shouldn’t be the sole means. So, let’s look at some examples, and since we (Hobble Creek Baptist Church) are in Utah and are seeking to save people out of Mormonism, let’s continue looking at Joseph Smith.
To start, look at this quote from Joseph Smith himself: “Come on! Ye prosecutors! Ye false swearers! All hell, boil over! Ye burning mountains, roll down your lava! For I will come out on the top at last. I have more to boast of than ever any man had. I am the only man that has ever been able to keep a whole church together since the days of Adam. A large majority of the whole have stood by me. Neither Paul, John, Peter, nor Jesus ever did it. I boast that no man ever did such a work as I. The followers of Jesus ran away from Him, but the Latter-day Saints never ran away from me yet.” — (History of the Church, vol. 6, p. 408-409)
No man with this much pride and narcissism should ever be followed. Try to find any “Christian” in the world today who is so proud as to say that he has done more than Jesus. You probably won’t be able to, for that has to be one of the most blasphemous things to ever be said. For those reading this who follow him, how can you believe his teachings after he claims to be greater than Jesus? Don’t say, “Nobody’s perfect.” There are certain levels of wickedness where we can no longer use that argument. If someone accidentally slips up and cusses, well then yes, nobody is perfect—be gracious to that person. However, if someone is going to essentially quote Satan (for Satan wanted to be higher than God too), and claim to have done more than Paul, Peter, John, and Jesus, then that is one of, if not the, most obvious sign of a false prophet. If Smith’s words here aren’t a sign of a demon-controlled man, then what is? Please, stay away from this man. Never follow someone who claims to be greater than Jesus.
Another action of Smith’s is the fact that he had 30+ wives, many of which were barely teenagers and many of which who were are already married to other men. There’s much recorded in history during, and immediately after his life about this, and therefore it is settled as a fact. The only people who don’t believe this, are those who refuse to look at the evidence. One book, “In Sacred Loneliness: The Plural Wives of Joseph Smith” by Todd M. Compton (who went to BYU), says this in its intro:
“Beginning in the 1830s, at least thirty-three women married Joseph Smith, the founder of Mormonism. These were passionate relationships which also had some longevity, except in cases such as that of two young sisters, one of whom was discovered by Joseph’s first wife, Emma, in a locked bedroom with the prophet. Emma remained a steadfast opponent of polygamy throughout her life.
The majority of Smith’s wives were younger than he, and one third were between fourteen and twenty years of age. Another third were already married, and some of the husbands served as witnesses at their own wife’s polyandrous wedding. In addition, some of the wives hinted that they bore Smith children—most notably Sylvia Sessions’s daughter Josephine—although the children carried their stepfather’s surname.
For all of Smith’s wives, the experience of being secretly married was socially isolating, emotionally draining, and sexually frustrating. Despite the believed spiritual and temporal benefits, which they acknowledged, they found their faith tested to the limit of its endurance. After Smith’s death in 1844, their lives became even more “lonely and desolate.” One even joined a convent. The majority were appropriated by Smith’s successors, based on the Old Testament law of the Levirate, and had children by them, though they considered these guardianships unsatisfying. Others stayed in the Midwest and remarried, while one moved to California. But all considered their lives unhappy, except for the joy they found in their children and grandchildren. “
Brigham Young said, “The only men who become Gods, even the sons of God, are those who enter into polygamy" — (Brigham Young, Journal of Discourses 11:269.) Brigham Young, just like many others, knew Smith was a polygamist, or else he never would have said this. Otherwise, Brigham Young would essentially be saying that Smith can never be a god. Young said this because he must have known Smith was indeed a polygamist.
Much more could be said about his character, but let me encourage anyone reading this who believes him to be a prophet, to do this: Take a step back, and don’t judge him as an already established prophet of God, but rather, judge him fairly, as someone that you aren’t certain yet if they are or aren’t a prophet of God. If you already conclude something as a fact, typically nothing that anyone can say will change your mind, not even other facts. Don’t do that. Take a step back, and use truth, evidence, and Biblical judgement to determine whether he is true or not. Don’t use emotion, and be against him already or be for him already, but rather, use fairness, and be willing to say, “I’ll accept whatever the evidence concludes.” If you do this, you will see that he cannot be a prophet of God.
Also, emotions and what your “heart” tells you, isn’t conclusive evidence of anything. Nowhere in the Bible does it say to use our heart to determine truth. The Bible says, “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?”
We love you and only share all of this out of care for you and your soul.
(2) Their Doctrine:
Now then, let’s deal with the second means by which to righteously judge whether someone is of God or not, and that is doctrine. This means of judging whether or not someone is a true prophet is one that is highly looked down upon and avoided today. Nobody wants to put in the work to study the Bible and seek for truth themselves. Most everybody wants to be spoon fed for the rest of their lives. However, if we honestly consider the Bible and what it warns of and teaches, we can be confident of some fundamental truths that a prophet or teacher of God must believe.
Take for instance John 8:24, 1 John 2:22-23 and 1 John 4:3, where we learn that “who we believe Jesus is,” is vitally important. In order, here’s what those verses say:
“I said therefore unto you, that ye shall die in your sins: for if ye believe not that I am he, ye shall die in your sins.”
“Who is a liar but he that denieth that Jesus is the Christ? He is antichrist, that denieth the Father and the Son. Whosoever denieth the Son, the same hath not the Father: he that acknowledgeth the Son hath the Father also.”
“And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that spirit of antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come; and even now already is it in the world.”
One of the reasons these verses (and there’s much more regarding this subject) are given is so that we can determine who is and isn’t a teacher of God. Who we believe Jesus is will greatly impact our lives after death. Those verses, as well as many more, clearly teach that. However, most religions today want to say it doesn’t matter—it isn’t a big deal. Don’t listen to them, listen to the Bible, for it says you must make sure that the Jesus you believe in, and the teacher you’re following, is of God. 1 John 4:1 says, “Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.” Have you heeded this warning? If not, please don’t take this caution and command lightly.
Another fundamental doctrine God warns us to make sure we believe correctly, is the gospel. God, in His Word, gives us what we need so that we can identify false gospel preachers, and so that we aren’t accursed with them. Consider the following verses:
Galatians 1:6-9: “I marvel that ye are so soon removed from him that called you into the grace of Christ unto another gospel: Which is not another; but there be some that trouble you, and would pervert the gospel of Christ. But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed. As we said before, so say I now again, if any man preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed.”
In this passage, Paul says that even if an “angel from heaven” preaches a different gospel than Paul’s gospel (which is Christ’s gospel), to let that angel be accursed. Have you believed a new gospel that an “angel from heaven” preached to someone? There are many religions that claim they started by some “angel” appearing to their prophet and giving that prophet a new gospel not found in the Bible. Obviously, any angel preaching “another gospel, which is not another” (Galatians 1:5-6), are not angels from heaven, but rather fallen angels disguised as God’s angels (2 Corinthians 11:13-15). Who knows, maybe an angel did appear to Muhammad, and then proceeded to give him a new gospel, just like he said. However, if something did appear to him, it had to be a fallen angel, for he received a new gospel not found in the Bible. Who knows, maybe an angel did appear to Joseph Smith, just like he said. However, if that did happen, it is a fact that it could not have been an angel of God, for Joseph’s gospel is diametrically opposed to the gospel found in the preserved Word of God.
Please remember, that this isn’t said because we hate Muslims or anyone who believes differently than us, but rather the opposite. We share this truth because we love you with Christ’s love. Christ’s love preaches the truth even if hated for it. God has called all true followers to blow the trumpet and warn of danger ahead, and if anyone is believing in a new gospel not found in the Bible, they’re going to be condemned for it, and therefore there is danger ahead. Jesus says in John 3:18, “He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.” Again, He says in John 3:36, “He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him.” How can we, believing that those who don’t believe on the true Christ and in the true gospel are condemned, not warn people? That’d be wicked of us to do. It is a fact, as Christ says, that those who don’t believe will be condemned, and it is a fact that there are many false Christs, teachers, prophets, Christians, angels, gods and churches in the world that are preaching drastically different gospels than the Bible’s gospel. Therefore, because we have God’s love, we warn you and will never withhold what we believe.
The best way to fully understand and believe the Bible’s gospel, is to read it for yourself and ask many questions. Please, click here where you’ll find a thorough gospel message filled with many verses, passages, and references so that you can study for yourself. Also, if you have any questions, please click here to ask us anything.
There are other specifics that could be mentioned here concerning important doctrines that we must know so that we can spot false teachers, but I think it has been proven that “what someone believes and teaches” is a vital means for determining false and true teachers of God. If you read through the New Testament, you’ll find that what others claim as truth, is a fundamental issue.
(3) Miraculous Proofs:
Next, what in the world is meant by “miraculous proofs.” Here’s what “miraculous proofs” means:
If someone is claiming to be a prophet of God and is claiming miracles as proof, then those miraculous powers he/she is claiming to have, need to be proven.
For instance, in Deuteronomy 18:20-22 the Word of God says this: “But the prophet, which shall presume to speak a word in my name, which I have not commanded him to speak, or that shall speak in the name of other gods, even that prophet shall die. And if thou say in thine heart, How shall we know the word which the Lord hath not spoken? When a prophet speaketh in the name of the Lord, if the thing follow not, nor come to pass, that is the thing which the Lord hath not spoken, but the prophet hath spoken it presumptuously: thou shalt not be afraid of him.”
Here, when someone is claiming to be a prophet, and people ask “How shall we know the word which the Lord hath not spoken?” God says that if their prophecies don’t come true, then they aren’t prophets. This seems reasonable and clear enough, so then how come nobody ever does this? There have been many, and currently are many still, who claim to be prophets of God, yet they are never tested. Remember, 1 John 4:1 says, “Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.” If a self-proclaimed prophet ever is tested, it is only with fortune cookie prophecies, which are general, unspecific prophecies that can be fulfilled a thousand ways. For instance, when you open a fortune cookie, it may say something like, “You will receive a gift this week.” Well, the odds of you getting something, whether it be a complement from someone, a physical item, or whatever, are extremely high. This is not how a prophet is to be tested. If someone is going to claim to be a prophet, they must give a prophecy that, (a) will be fulfilled soon, rather than 50 years down the road when their dead, and (b) must be something so specific that it’d be foolish to not believe them. However, even in this event, the more prophecies, the better.
Now, it must be said and emphasized that Satan will deceive people with fake wonders. 2 Thessalonians 2:9-10 says, “Even him, whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders, And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved.” This is why doctrine is so important. The devil isn’t going to rightfully teach people how to spend eternity with God. This is one thing he’ll never do. In fact, in that passage above, how does it say they will be deceived by these “lying wonders?” They’ll be deceived because they refused to love the truth. If they had loved the truth, and therefore accepted and known it, they would not have been deceived. However, they didn’t so they were easily tricked. So, don’t place too much emphasis on wonders and signs, for the devil can trick you. Make God’s truths number one.
Now then, let’s look at some examples of a self-proclaimed prophet, and see whether it is possible for him to be a prophet of God, and that man is Joseph Smith.
In 1832, Smith prophesied that an LDS temple would be built in Independence, Missouri within his generation. Almost 200 years later and no Temple has ever been built, but especially not during Smith’s generation. Here’s that passage: D&C 84:3-5 says, “Which city shall be built, beginning at the temple lot, which is appointed by the finger of the Lord, in the western boundaries of the State of Missouri, and dedicated by the hand of Joseph Smith, Jun., and others with whom the Lord was well pleased. Verily this is the word of the Lord, that the city New Jerusalem shall be built by the gathering of the saints, beginning at this place, even the place of the temple, which temple shall be reared in this generation. For verily this generation shall not all pass away until an house shall be built unto the Lord, and a cloud shall rest upon it, which cloud shall be even the glory of the Lord, which shall fill the house.” This didn’t happen in that generation, or any generation afterwards, and therefore he has to be a false prophet.
Another prophecy of Joseph Smith’s was about the coming of the Lord in 56 years. However, it never came true. Joseph Smith predicted in 1835 that, “The coming of the Lord, which was nigh — even fifty-six years should wind up the scene” (History of the Church, Vol. 2, 182). We all know that didn’t happen. Jehovah’s Witnesses had a similar prophecy in the early 1900s, and when the date came, Jesus never showed up, so they changed the meaning of the prophecy. The devil is tricky, but don’t let him fool you with clever tactics.
Another prophecy of Smith’s was that all Nations would be involved in the American Civil War: “Verily, thus saith the Lord concerning the wars that will shortly come to pass, beginning at the rebellion of South Carolina, which will eventually terminate in the death and misery of many souls; And the time will come that war will be poured out upon all nations, beginning at this place. For behold, the Southern States shall be divided against the Northern States, and the Southern States will call on other nations, even the nation of Great Britain, as it is called, and they shall also call upon other nations, in order to defend themselves against other nations; and then war shall be poured out upon all nations,” (Doctrine and Covenants 87:1-3). Not only did all nations not get involved, not even most got involved in any sort of way in the American Civil War, and neither did it result in war being poured out upon all nations. If you read this prophecy again, you’ll see many things in it that never came to pass.
Lastly, here’s another false prophecy of his. Smith prophesied about seeing the current twelve LDS apostles in the celestial Kingdom. However, seven of them apostatized, and therefore this would never happen.
[Joseph Smith:] “….I saw the Twelve Apostles of the Lamb, who are now upon the earth, who hold the keys of this last ministry, in foreign lands, standing together in a circle, much fatigued, with their clothes tattered and their feet swollen, with their eyes cast downward, and Jesus standing in their midst, and they did not behold him. The Saviour looked upon them and wept.
I also beheld Elder M’Lellin in the south, standing upon a hill, surrounded by a vast multitude, preaching to them, and a lame man standing before him supported by his crutches; he threw them down at his word and leaped as a hart, by the mighty power of God.
Also, I saw Elder Brigham Young standing in a strange land, in the far south and west, in a desert place, upon a rock in the midst of a bout a dozen men of color, who appeared hostile. He was preaching to them in their own tongue, and the angel of God standing above his head with a drawn sword in his hand, protecting him, but he did not see it.
And I finally saw the Twelve in the celestial kingdom of God. I also beheld the redemption of Zion and many things which the tongue of man cannot describe in full” – (D&C 137)
However, at least seven of the twelve were soon excommunicated and apostatized from the church: John F. Boynton & Luke S. Johnson (1837), Lyman Johnson (1838), William E. M’Lellin (c.1838), Thomas B. Marsh & Orson Hyde (1838), and William Smith (1845).
D&C 84:40-41 says, “Therefore, all those who receive the priesthood, receive this oath and covenant of my father, which he cannot break, neither can it be moved. But whoso breaketh this covenant after he hath received it, and altogether turneth there-from, shall not have forgiveness of sins in this world nor in the world to come.” This means those apostatized “apostles” will not be in the celestial kingdom. Their sins can never be forgiven.
Brigham Young said in Journal of Discourses 12:94, “If there is a despicable character on the face of the earth, it is an apostate from this Church. He is a traitor who has deceived his best friends, betrayed his trust, and forfeited every principle of honor that God placed within him. They may think they are respected, but they are not. They are disgraced in their own eyes. There is not much honesty within them; they have forfeited their heaven, sold their birthright, and betrayed their friends. What will the devil do with such characters? Will he have them in his kingdom? Yes, he will be obliged to, because he is an apostate himself. He apostatized from the Celestial Kingdom, and was thrust down to hell. Yet, when apostates get to his kingdom, he will say—’I do not like you, for you are just as mean as I am. I was a traitor and a liar, and I am yet. I despise myself and every character that betrays his trust.’ That is all I wish to say on that point. Let apostates go.”
John F. Boynton, one of the first apostles whom Joseph Smith said that he’d see in the celestial kingdom, later joined Warren Parish’s LDS sect “Church of Christ.”
William E. McLellin, was another one of those apostles who was excommunicated. Many things could be said about McLellin’s dislike for Joseph due to Joseph’s lies and mishandling of finances, but here’s a quote from the Latter Day Saint periodical, known as the Millennial Star, in 1864:
“While Joseph was in prison at Richmond, Mo., Mr. McLellin, who was a large and active man, went to the sheriff and asked for the privilege of flogging the Prophet; permission was granted, on condition that Joseph would fight. The sheriff made McLellin's earnest request known to Joseph, who consented to fight, if his irons were taken off. McLellin then refused to fight, unless he could have a club, to which Joseph was perfectly willing; but the sheriff would not allow them to fight on such unequal terms.
Previous to that incident, Smith authored a letter to the church from Liberty Jail on December 16, 1838, in which he made allusions to actions by McLellin that he vilified as sins.[13] In that letter, Smith likens McLellin to the biblical magician Balaam whose ass refused to help Balaam curse the Israelites, in the era of Moses. The letter may have been what provoked McLellin to attempt to fist-fight Smith.” — (McCune, George M. (1991). Personalities in the Doctrine and Covenants and Joseph Smith–History. Hawkes Publishing. pp. 76–77.)
Remember, Joseph Smith prophesied that he’d see McLellin and all the other apostles in the celestial kingdom. This has to be another false prophecy, and therefore he has to be a false prophet.
There are literally scores of prophecies that Smith made that never came true. There are many places you can find these false prophecies, but here’s one site that lists several: Joseph Smith False Prophet - Bible Prophecy and Truth.
Those who mention these false prophecies aren’t lying or putting words in Smith’s mouth, they are literally quoting his own words. If you believe him to be a prophet, since the Bible literally says to see if a prophet’s prophecies some true, you owe it to yourself to go to that website just listed and look at every one of those prophetic claims, and see for yourself. This is one of the most tangible means for determining a false prophet, and therefore it is not a guess, it is not a opinion, it is a fact, that Joseph cannot be a prophet of God.
Now, some may say, “The Lord changed His mind and that’s why those prophecies never came true.” However, if this was the case, then God’s own command is pointless in Deuteronomy 18, because a false prophet would always be able to use that as an excuse and escape goat. So, no, that is an unbiblical excuse. The only times a prophecy is allowed to not happen, is (a) if God had some sort of clause for the prophecy, such as “I will destroy this city unless they change their ways,” or (b) if God announces before the prophecy has the ability to be fulfilled, that He’s going to do something else instead.
False prophets always have some excuse for their prophecies, whether that be (a) they gave generalized prophecies and therefore it can be interpreted many ways, (b) they change the actual meaning of the prophecy after its supposed fulfillment, or (c) they say that God changed His mind. Don’t let false prophets deceive you. The Bible gives us all we need to know in order to spot one.
So, miraculous proofs can be done through prophecies, for only God knows the future, but it can also be through other miracles. For instance, if someone claims they have the ability to supernaturally heal others, then that must be proven—we aren’t to blindly believe them. Now, before we get into this area specifically, it must be noted that even if someone was able to supernaturally heal, that doesn’t mean they receive revelation from God, and therefore must be trusted 100% in their words. In the New Testament (NT), there were many sign gifts, such as healing, and being able to be bit by serpents, etc., but that doesn’t mean those who had those gifts received special revelation from God. For instance, many of the Corinthians in the NT had many sign gifts, yet they had much false doctrine and false practices as well. Though someone today performing an actual miracle should never go unnoticed, for it must mean something, that doesn’t necessarily mean everything that person says it true doctrine. Also, it must be noted that Satan can most likely do miracles (though never to the degree of God), and he certainly can use very deceptive and tricky means.
Now, with this all said, there are still many people today who claim authority in truth just because they can perform miracles, though in most cases, they probably aren’t doing any miracles. For instance, there have been many investigations done where certain churches claiming these supernatural powers have been proven to be liars and deceivers, where they pay poor people to pretend to have some issue and then to pretend to be healed, or where they use deceptive tactics to trick people, or where they only heal unseen issues, such as a chronic headache. Never has there ever been a video-recorded instance where someone with a proven visible infirmity, such as a broken leg, was healed on the spot. Never have we ever seen someone walk into a hospital to use their supernatural powers to heal everyone in there.
There are many examples of how people can be deceived by fake miracles. Can God perform miracles? Absolutely. However, be careful, for mankind is wicked, and the devil is even more wicked. People will lie for money, fame, and power, and even more will blindly believe them and be deceived and claim that they’ve witnessed miracles, when in reality they were tricked. If Eve can be tricked out of the Garden, be assured you can too. She would have done well to just trust God’s Word, and test Satan’s words to it, and we would do well to do the same.
Remember, Matthew 24:24 says, “For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall shew great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect.”
They will deceive many, and those deceived will never know it. Have you been deceived? If not, prove it. Don’t just point to your heart as evidence.
In conclusion, if someone claims to receive revelation from God and they mention supernatural powers as evidence, you must only believe them that they have those powers if they can prove it to you. We should never have blind faith. God never required blind faith in the Bible. God always proved Himself to people, and it is because He proved Himself that He demands they trust Him with other things they cannot see or know. The same goes with His Word: He has proven His Word, and therefore He demands we trust Him with what He says in it. For proof that we can trust His Word, here are some book recommendations:
— “Evidence for Christianity” by Josh McDowell.
— “The Case for Christ: A Journalist's Personal Investigation of the Evidence for Jesus” by Lee Strobel.
— “Evidence That Demands a Verdict: Life-Changing Truth for a Skeptical World” by Josh McDowell, & Sean McDowell.
— “Cold-Case Christianity: A Homicide Detective Investigates the Claims of the Gospels” by J. Warner Wallace.
There are so many other resources dealing with scientific statements in the Bible that prove it is from God, or archeological discoveries proving the Bible is accurate, or history agreeing with the Bible, or prophecies in the Bible proving it has to be of God, etc. Whatever area you want to dive into, you’ll see that the Bible has to be of God, and that is because God has proven it. Any other book out there claiming to be of God is going to be filled with errors in all of the previously mentioned areas, but the Bible has none.
Do you follow a prophet? Do their actions and the wicked things they do give evidence that they are not of God? Does their doctrine fit with the Bible? And did they prove that their claims of supernatural powers are true—did their prophecies come true?
Q7: What all must someone do to spend eternity with God?
Answer: believe the gospel of Christ.
Did you have a list of things? Were you thinking that we all must get baptized, go to church, do good, avoid certain sins, etc., in order to spend eternity with God? It’s okay, for most people think that, and that’s because every religion out there teaches “Do all these things and God will accept you,” except for Biblical Christianity, which teaches, “God did all this for you, and now wants you to accept Him.”
So then, let’s dissect this phrase, “Believe the gospel of Christ,” for there are many who think they believe the gospel of Christ, but actually don’t, and that is because they don’t have: (a) biblical belief, (b) the Biblical gospel, and/or (c) the Biblical Christ. You see, to believe on Christ, you must believe like the Bible says to. If someone thinks “believe” means to repeat words without meaning them—without sincerity—then they aren’t actually believing. Jesus condemns vain repetitions (Matthew 6:7). There are many misunderstandings people have regarding what it means to believe, so we must make sure we believe like the Bible says to. Likewise, if someone thinks the gospel story is a parable, and that Christ didn’t actually die on the cross, then they aren’t believing in the Bible’s gospel. Again, if someone thinks that Christ accomplished less than Joseph Smith, and that Jesus is the brother of Satan, and that He is a created being, then they aren’t believing on the Bible’s Christ. Someone must believe with biblical belief, the biblical gospel, and the biblical Christ.
So, as mentioned several times before, the best way to know the gospel of Christ, is to pick up the Bible, and put in the care and effort to study it for yourself. However, I’ll give you a head start:

Please don’t take eternal life lightly. This is the most important subject anyone could ever invest time in to figure out. If you read the verses listed above with an honest heart, you will not regret it.
So, what all must someone do to have eternal life? Simply trust Christ, just like Jesus said: “He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God” (John 3:18).
